Seniors Week - August 13-21 2016

Seniors Week acknowledges the contribution older people have made to the North Burnett; as volunteers or in the work force, community pillars, carers, grandparents or advocates.

On Thursday, 18 August each North Burnett Library will host a celebratory day, to enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships through an afternoon tea, sharing stories, Nintendo Wii activities, photographic exhibitions and more.

Seniors Week aims to improve community attitudes towards older people and ageing, facilitate community participation and activity by older people, including those from Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and also enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships.

North Burnett Regional Council Mayor Rachel Chambers said Seniors Week was an opportunity for locals of all ages to join together and celebrate the valuable contributions of older people.

"Seniors week is an opportunity for all of us not only to acknowledge the huge part our older generation plays in our lives and communities but to celebrate this fact."

"Seniors are the pot of gold within a community. Not only do they regularly assist families with their caring responsibilities but many of our community groups and services would cease to exist without seniors volunteering their time and extensive efforts. Older generations have extensive life experience and work backgrounds and we need to harness their knowledge and experiences in order for our community to be the best it can be."

Running from 13-21 August 2016, North Burnett Seniors Week celebrations will culminate in a community morning tea at each North Burnett Library on Thursday 18 August from 2:30pm onwards.

An inter-generational photographic exhibition of local inspirational seniors is also planned to be on display at each library during the week.

North Burnett Seniors Week celebrations are made possible through funding from the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services and the support of COTA Queensland.
