North Burnett Community Services Network

Servicing: Biggenden, Eidsvold, Gayndah, Monto, Mt Perry, Mundubbera

NETWORK HISTORY, AIMS & PROJECTS

History:
The Network was initiated in early 1996 by services funded under the Dept. Families Youth and Community Care and the Young People at Risk Program to allow service providers in the communities of Biggenden, Gayndah, Mundubbera, Eidsvold, Mt Perry and Monto the opportunity to network and share information. By early 1997 the network attendance and productivity was significantly reduced, possibly due to staff turnover. Half-way through 1997, Monto Community Development Council Inc, Mundubbera Community Development Association, Young People At Risk Program & The Department of Families Youth & Community Care got together to relaunch the network.
The Networks outcomes and effectiveness fluctuates with membership. Since its conception the Network has been responsible for the very successful Battle of the Burnett which was held for young people in the region to share in a day of activities and learning. This event rotated to each North Burnett Community annually for nearly a decade.
The network also provides a support system for new workers to the area as a way of reducing staff turnover, which is an ongoing issue in rural areas. A service directory that includes editorial information specific to our area was produced and widely distributed in 1999/2000. The Youth Development Initiative Group (YDIG), was an ongoing sub-committee of the Network, this group was responsible for coordinating the very successful Battle of the Burnett and is undertaking Youth Expo Projects in the region.
The network has the scope to provide new and old workers with much support and to continue forging ahead with effective and interesting regional projects.

Aims of the Network:
 Improve communication and collaboration between services in the region;
 Enhance networking and information sharing between these services and the broader community.
 Provide a meeting point with government services, local councils and Members of Legislative Assembly and community members.
 Form collective advocacy and lobbying groups to respond to local issues; and
 Form special interest groups where appropriate to advance identified priority issues.

Operating Principles
Members commit to the following principles during meeting times:
 Respect others opinions - encourage others to express diverse views
 Participate to own capacity
 Don’t monopolise meeting

Objective/Purpose
The NBCSN recognise the need in the North Burnett Region to:
 Improve communication and collaboration between services in the region
 Enhance networking and information sharing between these services and the broader community;
 Work together with mutual respect;
 Accompany and complement existing funding agreements between parties and funding bodies;
 Provide a meeting point with government services, local councils and Members of Legislative Assembly and community members.
 Have a shared responsibility to be proactive in collectively responding to situations of concern and community issues;
 Have a shared understanding of the assets and issues challenging families, children, young people and communities;
 Better design, target and develop creative workable solutions for all people and communities; and
 Support sustainable prosperous communities in the North Burnett Region.
 Establish and maintain a contemporary community directory for North Burnett Region Services and Visiting Services.

This network identifies how the parties will work collectively together, with a focus towards creating better outcomes for all people living in the North Burnett
